Absolutely love this book. The photographs feel so alive and personal — you really get a sense of the people, the parties and the energy of that time. Looking through it honestly makes me wish I could have been part of that East London scene. Such a beautiful document of a very special era ✨

„The East London Years“ von Ralf Obergfell ist weit mehr als ein Fotobuch über das Nachtleben in East London. Es ist ein wichtiges Zeitdokument und ein fotografisches Archiv einer queeren Szene, die in einer besonderen Phase ihrer Geschichte sichtbar wird.
Obergfell dokumentiert eine Welt, in der Social Media und die heutige Logik von Likes, Followern und digitaler Selbstdarstellung noch keine zentrale Rolle spielten. Seine Fotografien zeigen Menschen, Partys, Performances, Freundschaften und Gemeinschaft nicht als inszenierte Posts, sondern als unmittelbar gelebte Realität.
Gerade dadurch wird das Buch für mich zu einem wertvollen Stück Zeitgeschichte. Es bewahrt eine Szene, Orte und Menschen, die ohne solche Dokumente vielleicht längst vergessen wären. Obergfell documents a world in which social media and today’s logic of ‘likes’, ‘followers’ and digital self-expression did not yet play a central role. His photographs depict people, parties, performances, friendships and community not as staged posts, but as reality as it was lived in the moment.
It is precisely this that makes the book, for me, a valuable piece of contemporary history. It preserves a scene, places and people that might long since have been forgotten without such documents. And it serves as a reminder of how much queer freedom, culture and self-determined community have already been fought for and lived out.

obergfell liefert hier ein absolut (!) unverzcihtbares zeitdokument . wer sich für visuelle anthropolgie und queere subkultur interessiert, kommt an diesen intimen, ungeschönten bildern einfach nicht vorbei -- das steht für mich in direkter trdition zu goldin und tillmans. aus kunsthistorischer sicht ne extrem wichige archivarische arbeit, die genau das rohe london zeigt, bevor die gentrifizierung alles glattgebügelt hat. absolute kaufempfhelung! This is a beautiful must-have publication for everybody with an interest in photography, London in the noughties, and/or the history of queerness. The generous and well-curated selection of images accompanied by anecdotes and thoughts from the people who were there, is a touching tale of freedom and the dancefloor as an activist space. At a moment when LGBTQIA+ rights are under pressure, this record of a self-organised, joyful and defiant queer community is not just a lovely, nostalgic homage to the artist´s years in London, but an important, inspiring piece of cultural history.
